Flag Raisings and Proclamations
The City of Iqaluit pays tribute to special days through flag-raising, half-masting and proclamations.
Flags flown at half-mast for mourning
National and city flags may be lowered to half-mast to commemorate special dates or as a measure of respect and condolence when a high-profile official passes away.
The City of Iqaluit flag may be lowered to half-mast for the death of a prominent resident, generally from the time of notification until the day of the funeral.
Annual half-masting dates include:
- April 28 for National Day of Mourning for Persons Killed or Injured in the Workplace;
- November 11 for Remembrance Day; and
- December 6 for National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
Flag-raising for special occasions
Community groups and organizations can request to council to have their flag flown at City Hall to raise public awareness of an initiative or event.
Proclamations
Community groups and organizations can request to council to name an official or unofficial holiday or anniversary which commemorates or raises public awareness of an initiative or event.
How can I request a flag-raising or proclamation?
Submit your request in writing to the City Clerk at least 30 days in advance of the event. Repeat requests must be submitted on an annual basis. Requests are approved by City Council based on the mandate and strategic goals of the City of Iqaluit.
In your request, include the following information:
- Name of the requesting group or organization
- Contact information including telephone number and email address
- Requested event or occasion
- Date or time period of event or occasion
- Explanation or purpose of the event or occasion
- Description of the applicant organization including any local, national or international affiliation, brief history, and any other relevant information
