How to get licensed

Written exam

Potential taxi drivers must complete a written taxi examination

All potential taxi drivers need to visit the Municipal Enforcement office on any Tuesday or Thursday (except holidays) to complete the written taxi examination and provide confirmation of a Sponsorship Letter from the Livery License holder. The exam consists of 25 questions to be completed in 30 minutes. The passing grade is 80% and can be retaken until passed. Upon completion of this examination, you will be awarded the opportunity to complete your practical (or driving) examination. An officer will accompany you and direct you to visit five (5) addresses in the City of Iqaluit. A passing grade on the practical portion of the examination is 60%, or 3/5 locations correct.

Once you have completed, and passed, both the written and practical portions of the taxi examination you can complete your taxi business license application form. You will be required to provide a copy of your Sponsorship Letter, Criminal Record Check, Vulnerable Sector Check and valid Class-4 Driver’s License for record purposes at this time. Upon completion of the application form you will be notified of any outstanding fines and will be directed to visit City Hall to pay for the Taxi Permit, Taxi Vehicle Permit, and Business license (if applicable). After payment, you will be required to bring the proof of payment to the Municipal Enforcement office in exchange for your Taxi Drivers Permit and Vehicle Permit.

Vehicle maintenance

Taxi vehicles are required to be inspected twice annually, in January and June. A certified mechanic must complete the inspection. If the vehicle does not pass inspection, the Municipal Enforcement Department will suspend the Vehicle Permit until the vehicle is compliant.
