World Water Day 2026 – Water and Gender
Every year on March 22, the United Nations marks World Water Day to celebrate water and raise awareness of the two billion people currently living without access to safe water. In Durham Region, we are lucky to be home to some of the best tap water in the world.
On March 3, the Region of Durham, along with local municipal and community partners, welcomed residents from across the region to its annual International Women’s Day celebration. This year’s theme, “balance the scales,” focused on the essential role that health and well‑being play in supporting women and girls.
Recent road collisions have highlighted the serious risks first responders face every day—simply for doing their jobs. In these incidents, emergency workers were injured and emergency vehicles were damaged because drivers did not follow Ontario’s “Move Over” law.
Big news for transit riders, commuters and communities across Durham Region—Metrolinx has officially broken ground on GO Transit’s Lakeshore East Extension to Bowmanville, marking a major milestone in the province’s plan to reduce gridlock and expand access to fast, affordable and reliable transit.
This transformative project will extend the GO Lakeshore East line 18.
Durham Region is proud to share that Service Durham (311) has been officially recognized as a Dementia Friendly Supporter by the Durham Alzheimer’s Society. This recognition reflects an ongoing commitment to creating a community where everyone feels understood, respected, and supported.

Over the past year, hate-motivated activity in our region has increased—vandalism, graffiti and acts targeting individuals and groups because of who they are. These incidents undermine the safety and sense of belonging of every resident.
Black History Month is a time to honour and celebrate the contributions that Black Canadians have made to our country. It is also an opportunity to educate ourselves on Black history, and continue to combat anti-Black racism in Canada.
