YouthForce looking for new applicants after successful first year

Waterloo Region – YouthForce will accept new applicants at a job fair this Saturday after a successful first year helping teens and young adults become champions in their community housing neighbourhoods.

The summer employment program gives youth between the ages of 14 and 25 who live in or near housing owned by the Region of Waterloo the opportunity to work in their neighourhoods while building skills to help with their future careers.

“The program allows youth to develop a sense of pride and accountability for their community,” said Mina Fayez-Bahgat, Manager of Waterloo Region Housing. “We are investing in a younger generation of tenants who are focused on making a difference within their community and for themselves.”

The program is part of a Regional strategy to help break the cycle of poverty and create healthy communities and vibrant neighbourhoods. Youth do various jobs including unit inspections, which led to savings for the Region last year. “By using the resources set aside for unit inspections we were able to do nearly a year's worth of work in seven weeks," said Fayez-Bahgat.
