Water Conservation Bylaw in effect to ensure water supply for critical needs

Waterloo Region – The Region of Waterloo’s annual Water Conservation Bylaw is in effect from May 31 to September 30. The bylaw limits outdoor water use through the high-demand summer months to ensure we have enough water for critical needs like drinking and firefighting.

Residents can water lawns one day each week, and trees, shrubs and gardens every other day, between 5:30 and 10 a.m., and 7 and 11 p.m., depending on their house number. If residents have planted grass seed or sod they must apply for a temporary permit by contacting the Region.

“We rely on limited groundwater sources for our drinking water in Waterloo Region, so we need to be smart about how we use that water every day,” said Councillor Colleen James, Chair of Planning and Works Committee. “By allowing each address one day per week to water lawns, it spreads out water demands and ensures we have enough water for everyone’s needs.”

Information on your watering day and how to apply for permits or other bylaw details is available at regionofwaterloo.ca/waterbylaw or call 519-575-4400.
