Training teaches best management practices on winter salt use
Waterloo Region – The Region of Waterloo and the Smart About Salt Council are hosting the Smart About Salt Essentials Training Program in Cambridge on Tuesday, October 2, 2012.
During the winter months salt is used to help protect parking lots and walkways from icy buildup. Incorrect and excessive use can lead to increased costs to repair infrastructure and cause damage to the environment. When the snow melts, salt can enter our water ways affecting our source water for drinking.
To address these concerns, Smart About Salt™ Essentials Training was introduced. This accredited course teaches snow and ice removal companies and property/facility managers best management practices on salt use without compromising safety. Topics include principles of ice formation, salt science, application rates, calibrating your equipment, and making the most of weather forecasts. Participants who pass the exam receive a certificate as a Smart About Salt Accredited Operator.
Craig Walsh, Operations Manager at Conestoga Mall and Smart About Salt Accredited Site Manager, explains “This training supports Ivanhoé Cambridge’s environmental commitment. Many of the tools and tips taught at the training can be immediately applied equating to better management of salt without compromising safety.”
Next training takes place in Cambridge on Tuesday, October 2, 2012. The $195 + H.S.T. cost covers the full day training and lunch. Seating is limited and advanced registration is required.
