Tips for garbage collection during windy conditions

Waterloo Region – High winds are causing a challenge for waste collection in the Region today. To help prevent garbage and recycling from blowing around, residents in Tuesday collection areas are encouraged to keep items indoors this evening. Items should be put out at the curb by 7 a.m. on Tuesday.

  • Tips for garbage and recycling collection on a windy day: Put out garbage bags at the curb instead of garbage cans. Garbage cans may blow into the street.
  • Hold onto lightweight items, including your blue boxes, until your next collection day.
  • If you choose to put out your blue box for collection, place heavier items on top and lighter items on the bottom.
  •  Avoid overfilling your blue box.
  • Secure paper items, such as newspapers and flyers, inside a grocery or retail shopping bag and tie closed.

Collection crews will do their best to collect items, however crews are not responsible for litter or overturned containers caused by inclement weather.
