Sunnyside celebrates 150 years during Seniors’ Month
Waterloo Region – Sunnyside Home is sharing its deep-rooted history with the public during Seniors’ Month, showing how care for older adults has evolved in 150 years.
“We’ve come a long way from our roots,” said Connie Lacy, Director of Seniors’ Services at the Region of Waterloo. “In the 1860s, residents at the House of Industry and Refuge were treated like inmates with strict rules. This is in stark contrast to the Sunnyside we know today, where residents are treated like family. We create new opportunities for them to live their best life every day.”
Lacy will be among the speakers on the evening of June 18th. She will be joined by Hailey Johnson, Curator of the Wellington County Museum and Archives, who will present, “If These Walls Could Speak: The Waterloo and Wellington County Houses of Industry and Refuge.” An exhibit will also be on display showing the events that shaped the path for seniors care in our community.
