Stage 2 ION: LRT from Kitchener to Cambridge

Waterloo Region – The Region of Waterloo is beginning public consultation on Stage 2 ION, Light Trail Transit (LRT) from Kitchener to Cambridge.

In 2011, Region of Waterloo Council approved a staged approach to LRT from Waterloo to Cambridge. Stage 1 ION includes LRT from Kitchener to Waterloo as well as Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) from Kitchener to Cambridge. Stage 2 ION will see LRT extended from Kitchener to Cambridge, creating a continuous LRT system connecting the region’s three urban centres.

The Region of Waterloo has started the detailed planning for Stage 2 ION and is encouraging public feedback on the Council-endorsed route as well as feedback on route alternatives. This is an opportunity to confirm the feasibility of the Council endorsed route, taking into account design challenges, development and intensification initiatives since the route was endorsed in 2011. Public feedback will help inform which LRT route will be most effective and provide the greatest benefits to the local area and Waterloo Region as a whole.

Two Public Consultation Centres offer an opportunity to provide feedback:

November 18, 2015, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., Cambridge City Hall (Bowman Room), 50 Dickson Street, Cambridge.

November 19, 2015, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Kingsdale Community Centre, 72 Wilson Avenue, Kitchener.

Over the next six months, background studies, technical analysis and consultation activities will continue, including a second round of public consultation in late 2016 to present the preferred route.
