Snapshot of homelessness in Waterloo Region shows number is down 12 per cent
Waterloo Region – Waterloo Region’s latest Point in Time Count shows fewer people were homeless on April 23 than during the last snapshot taken in 2014.
Last week, 264 individuals and families reported being homeless; 12 per cent less than the last count. The number of homeless youth was down by 11 percent.
“We are headed in the right direction as a community; but there is more work to do before everyone has a place to call home,” said Deb Schlichter, Director of Housing Services.
The latest count saw a group of more than 90 Regional and local agency staff and volunteers visit shelters, drop-ins, transitional housing, and walk the streets.
Eighty-five percent of those counted said they were staying in local shelters; the rest were sleeping in unsheltered places, including tents or public places.
“The results show that at this time, shelters in the region can accommodate the demand for their services,” said Schlichter.
Like the first count in 2014, people staying in shelter were asked questions that help to assess how much support they need. Forty-three percent had a high level of need. This means they may benefit from more intensive supports like mental health and addiction services.
“People with high need often benefit from affordable housing and supports that help them to stay housed. We are focusing on reducing the wait time for these services as we work to end chronic homelessness,” said Schlichter.
More details from the snapshot will be made public late next month. These will include key data on gender, age, Indigenous status, use of emergency services, and veteran status.
Starting this year, the Province requires municipalities to conduct these counts every two years. This coordinated effort offers a picture of homelessness across Canada. The count is funded by Employment and Social Development Canada.
