Schneider Haus Quilting Bee
Kitchener, ON – Quilters from the St. Jacobs Mennonite community and members of the Waterloo County Quilters’ Guild will be demonstrating their quilting expertise between May 24 and 30 at a Schneider Haus Quilting Bee. In addition, a selection of one-of-a-kind quilts are on display until May 29, to be sold at the 48th annual Ontario Mennonite Relief Sale and Quilt Auction in New Hamburg.
In the Schneider house, costumed staff will be quilting petticoats and bonnets as they would have done in the mid-19th century. Budding quilters are welcome to add a stitch or two.
On Saturday, May 24, Mennonite quilters will be gathering at Schneider Haus to quilt the 2014 Quilt Block Contest quilt and contest winners will be announced at 4 p.m. This year’s theme, Out of This World, could be interpreted in any way the entrant s’ chose, but had to include the colour navy blue.
Members of the Waterloo County Quilters’ Guild will be demonstrating their stitching skills on May 28, 29 and 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Joseph Schneider Haus’ restoration to the era of the 1850s pre-dates the use of cotton bed quilts as tied comforters, woven sheets and blankets, which were the bed coverings preferred by Pennsylvania-Germans during this period. It has since become an annual treat to take our decorative locally-made quilts out of storage and exhibit them in the historic house during quilt month in May. In collaboration with the Quilt Block Contest theme, Out of This World, we are showcasing quilts depicting the sun, earth and a multitude of stars from our collection.
