Rod Regier appointed Commissioner of Planning, Development and Legislative Services

Waterloo Region – Rod Regier has been appointed the new Commissioner of Planning, Development and Legislative Services for the Region of Waterloo.

“Rod brings to the Commissioner position a strong background in Planning and Economic Development, and a track record of building productive partnerships,” said Mike Murray, Chief Administrative Officer. “I’m sure he will work well with the excellent team in the Department to continue the Region’s efforts to build a sustainable, livable, thriving community.”

Mr. Regier joins the Region from the City of Kitchener where he has been the Executive Director, Economic Development for the past 11 years. Rod started his career as a planner in the Region of Hamilton Wentworth, and went on to progressively responsible positions with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, including Director of Strategic Partnerships and Regional Director, for the Department of Development and Rural Renewal.

“I am excited to have the opportunity to contribute at the regional level,” said Mr. Regier. “The Region has made significant progress on two major files that will shape this community for decades to come: the ION rapid transit project and the Regional Official Plan. The work of the team at the Region on these projects has been outstanding.”

“I am very pleased we have ‎secured Rod to be our new Commissioner,” said Councillor Tom Galloway, Chair of the Region’s Planning and Works Committee. “His background in community planning and economic development in Waterloo Region makes him a great fit and ready to hit the road running at the regional level.” 

Mr. Regier has a Master of Arts degree in Regional Planning and Resource Development from the University of Waterloo. He has undertaken a number of international projects for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and in 2013 was awarded the Diamond Jubilee Medal by the Government of Canada. 

The Planning, Development and Legislative Services department is responsible for planning the future growth of our community. This includes the operation of the Region of Waterloo International Airport, the Region’s museums and libraries, economic development, as well as oversight of the Regional Official Plan. It also provides a broad range of corporate services, including legal counsel, real estate, licensing, by-law enforcement, corporate publishing, Council support, and Provincial Offenses court prosecution and administration.
