Road openings and closings for ION construction

Waterloo Region – GrandLinq has advised the Region of Waterloo of several road openings and closings that will take place in Kitchener and Waterloo as part of light rail transit (LRT) construction.

Road Openings

The Caroline/Erb intersection will open today (September 20 at approx. 7 p.m.)

  • While the intersection will open, a small portion of Caroline (the southwest lane, from Erb to Father David Bauer) will remain closed until early-October. During this time, two traffic movements will be affected: the through-movement from Bridgeport (over Erb) to Caroline; and, the right-hand movement from Erb to Caroline. In both cases, access to Caroline or Erb will be provided via a detour on Father David Bauer

  • When the Caroline/Erb intersection opens, two-way traffic on Erb (between King and the Parking Lot next to the Atrium) will end and Erb will revert back to a one-way street

  •  The King/Victoria intersection will open on or about September 28

  •  The Charles/Victoria intersection will open on or about September 28

  • Victoria, from Weber and Joseph, will open to two-way traffic on or about September 28

  • King, from Victoria to Francis, will open to two-way traffic on or about September 28

  • Charles, from Victoria to Benton, will open to two-way traffic on or about September 30

  • The King/Allen intersection will open on or about September 30

  • At Highway 85/Northfield, the north and southbound off-ramps as well as the southbound on-ramp will open on or about September 30

 Road Closings

  • The King/William intersection will close on or about September 21 until approximately late-November to facilitate placement of the LRT tracks and related infrastructure

  • University at the railway tracks will close on or about September 23 for approximately four days to install corrosion protection on the LRT tracks. In addition to their regular day shift (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.), crews are expected to work at night in this area (7 p.m. to 7 a.m.) to complete this construction. A detour via Phillip-Columbia-Westmount will be in place

  • Columbia at the railway tracks will close on or about September 27 for approximately four days to install corrosion protection on the LRT tracks. In addition to their regular day shift (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.), crews are expected to work at night in this area (7 p.m. to 7 a.m.) to complete this construction. A detour via Phillip-University-Westmount will be in place
