Regional Council endorses ambitious TransformWR climate change plan

Waterloo Region – At the Committee of the Whole Meeting today, Regional Council endorsed the TransformWR strategy. TransformWR is a region-wide climate action mitigation plan, aimed at reducing greenhouse (GHG) emissions. This action plan will guide the community’s energy transition off of fossil fuels, and advance the Region's strategic focus areas of sustainable transportation, environment and climate action, healthy, safe and inclusive communities, and a thriving economy.

In 2018, all city and township councils, as well as Regional Council, committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the region by 80 percent by 2050.

Over the past few weeks, the TransformWR strategy has been endorsed by all municipal councils and will be formally approved on June 30 at Regional Council.

"Creating a world-class community for our residents requires action today while thinking towards the future," said Regional Chair Karen Redman. "This climate strategy is one step we are taking to make Waterloo Region a place where residents not only want to live and work but also thrive. I look forward to working with our partners in the community and at all levels of government to implement this plan and create a healthy, sustainable community for generations to come."

ClimateActionWR is a collaborative led by Reep Green Solutions and Sustainable Waterloo Region and funded by the Region of Waterloo and the cities of Cambridge, Kitchener, and Waterloo. The TransformWR project received funding from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities through their Transition 2050 grant program; all municipalities in Waterloo Region played a role throughout the plan’s development.
