Regional Council approves agreement with Unifor Local 4304

Waterloo Region - The Region of Waterloo approved a 40-month agreement with UNIFOR Local 4304 representing Grand River Transit/MobilityPLUS operators, dispatchers, fleet mechanics and service attendants. GRT will return to full service Saturday, February 1, 2020.

“We understand that this strike seriously impacted the lives of many citizens, including vulnerable residents who rely on transit to get to work, school and medical appointments,” said Regional Chair Karen Redman.

The 40-month agreement from Jan. 1, 2020 to April 30, 2023 provides a six percent increase for all employees. The agreement also gives an additional $3.00 per hour increase for mechanics and a $2.25 per hour increase for part-time employees over the life of the agreement.

"We're pleased that we were able to reach a fair and reasonable settlement and we’re pleased to get the buses running again,” said Mike Murray, Chief Administrative Officer. "We respect our GRT employees and the hard work they do to provide safe and reliable transit services to our community.”

In recognition of the inconvenience caused by the transit strike, the Region will refund January pass holders for 50 per cent of the purchased value of their pass, in addition, GRT will be free system-wide (including ION and MobilityPLUS) every weekend in February, up to and including February 29.  Free service includes Family Day, Monday, February 17. (10 days). Visit GRT.ca/refund for full details.
