Region wins 2013 Concrete Award for the Fairway Road Grand River Bridge
Waterloo Region – The Region of Waterloo was recognized by the 2013 Ontario Concrete Awards for the Fairway Road Grand River Bridge. The award was presented in the structural design innovation category.
This annual competition focuses on the achievements of owners, designers, contractors and suppliers that have made concrete their construction material of choice.
“I am very pleased that the Fairway Road Grand River Bridge was officially recognized for its innovation,” said Regional Chair Ken Seiling. “Congratulations to the team of Regional staff, contractors, engineers and bridge construction specialists who made this happen.”
The Fairway Road Bridge is the first new roadway bridge over the Grand River in at least 40 years. Built using more than 23,000 tonnes of concrete, the pre-stressed, post-tensioned concrete, cast-in-place segmental cantilever construction was chosen to avoid the need for piers and temporary supports in the Grand River. It is one of only a dozen bridges of its kind in Ontario and known for its durability.
“The Region continually looks for innovative ways to deliver our projects and programs,” said Mike Murray, CAO. “This has resulted in an excellent facility which will provide lasting value to the community for many decades.”
Since its official opening late in 2012, motorists, cyclists and pedestrians have enjoyed the design of the bridge which includes a graceful tapered superstructure, stone masonry finishes at the abutments, custom wave pattern open external railing, architectural lamp standards and luminaires, pedestrian plazas and lookouts at each end of bridge and stone masonry gateway markers.
