Region warns residents to call before agreeing to water audit

Waterloo Region – The Region of Waterloo has learned that residents are being approached by sales people claiming to be affiliated with the Region of Waterloo’s WET Challenge home water audit program and offering to perform in-home inspections for a fee. The Region’s program offers to help high water users reduce their water consumption with a free consultation and residents are contacted only via a mailed letter from the Region. If you are contacted in any other manner, it is not affiliated with the Region.

“If you receive a letter from the Region, we urge you to call us at 519-575-4400, ext. 3151 to verify,” said the Region’s Water Efficiency Manager Steve Gombos. “That is the only number you should call to ask about the free audit.”

The WET Challenge program is a free service to residents who have high water use. Any person or company offering help for a fee are not affiliated in any way with the Region. The Region contracts REEP, a local firm that conducts water use audits, to do the in-home inspections, but all customer contact will come through the Region. This is always done initially through a letter on official Region letterhead and never door-to-door.

The Region also warns private companies not to mislead the public by using its name or any program names in their own business solicitation.
