Region to present Chicopee Tube Park with Water Efficiency Award

Waterloo Region – Regional Chair Ken Seiling will be at Chicopee Tube Park on Friday, September 11, 2015 at noon to present the Water Efficiency Excellence Award to the facility for the large water re-use project they recently completed.

With funding from the Region’s Water Efficient Technology (W.E.T.) program, as well as support from a number of local partners, Chicopee constructed a stormwater retention pond at the bottom of the tube hill and now uses this water to create snow during the winter season. This effort has reduced the amount of drinking water used for snow-making by over 97 percent, with over 14,200 cubic metres of water now coming from the pond.

“Chicopee is leading by example in using strong environmental principles to guide their business practice,” said Region Water Services Director Nancy Kodousek. “A project like this shows great land stewardship in many ways, from the large amounts of water conserved, to the reduced energy demands for pumping and a large reduction in the amount of stormwater running into storm drains.”

Each year, the Region awards one business the Water Efficiency Excellence Award for taking strong action to reduce their water use. Previous winners include Suds Express, Kraus Flooring, Marsland, Babcock and Wilcox and Toyota.
