Region to launch ION safety campaign

Waterloo Region – Residents will soon see ION trains being tested along the light rail transit (LRT) tracks between the Northfield stop and the Erb/Caroline intersection in Waterloo. This section of test track will also be the first area to see the overhead LRT wires powered up. In advance of this testing and powering up, the Region will launch an ION safety campaign, dubbed ‘train your brain.’

The ‘train your brain’ campaign will focus on three key safety messages:

  • Overhead wires are live – look up, stay clear and stay safe.

  • Obey new signage – tracks are for trains. Do not stop or park on the LRT tracks.

  • Stay alert – safety begins with you.

“It’s important to establish clear safety messaging in advance of the start of ION vehicle testing,” said Councillor Tom Galloway, Chair of the Region of Waterloo’s Planning and Works Committee. “Residents need to keep in mind that while the rules of the road haven’t changed, new signage has been added and it’s important to remain alert while driving, walking or cycling around the LRT tracks.”

Residents will also begin to see ION safety messaging around the Region later this spring and at the upcoming ION vehicle open house on April 8.
