Region seeks Community Input on ION Public Art

Waterloo Region – The community has an opportunity over the next few weeks to help shape unique and creative public spaces at selected ION rapid transit stops.

Through the ION Public Art Project, the Region is commissioning up to seven new artworks and is looking for input from the community. The artworks will be located at the Conestoga, Research and Technology, Grand River Hospital, Kitchener Market, Mill, Block Line and Fairway ION Light Rail Transit (LRT) stops. Each artwork will be an opportunity to reflect the identity of its neighbourhood, create an interesting public space, and enhance the transit rider experience.

Members of the public are encouraged to view and comment on the proposed artworks from November 22 to December 9, 2016 by visiting:

  • Regional Administrative Headquarters, 150 Frederick St., Kitchener

o   Any Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

o   Wednesday, November 30, 4:30 – 7 p.m., and/or

The public is also invited to attend artist presentations to the public art jury on December 5, 2016. Contact khagerman@regionofwaterloo.ca for more details.

The ION public artworks are being selected using a two stage juried process. In the fall of 2015, the Region undertook a broad community consultation, which provided a foundation for the Call to Artists issued in early 2016. In response to the Call, the Region received over 60 proposals from over 40 artists. The jury met in July and, with input from community stakeholders and Regional staff, shortlisted 15 proposals.  Shortlisted artists were then asked to refine, expand and resubmit their proposals.

Public input on these 15 shortlisted proposals will assist the jury in making a recommendation to Regional Council on the artworks to be commissioned.
