Region of Waterloo recognized for leadership role in celebrating and protecting heritage
Waterloo Region – The Region of Waterloo will accept the 2012 Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Award for Community Leadership at today’s Regional Council meeting beginning at 3:15 p.m.
"The Region of Waterloo is honoured to receive the Lieutenant Governor's Ontario Heritage Award for Community Leadership," said Regional Chair Ken Seiling. "The Region has had a long involvement and commitment to heritage conservation and promotion and we are dedicated to being good stewards of the Region's heritage resources and promoting the same in the broader community."
The Award for Community Leadership was created by the Ontario Heritage Trust to recognize communities that have a proven track record and have demonstrated leadership in heritage conservation and celebration, and to promote leadership in heritage conservation and celebration in Ontario’s communities through recognition of excellence. The Region of Waterloo is the first regional municipality to receive this honour and is one of four communities to receive the award this year.
The Region provides ongoing support for heritage through its stewardship, programming, promotion, conservation and commemorative efforts including:
- Operation of the award winning Waterloo Region Museum, Joseph Schneider Haus National Historic Site, Doon Heritage Village and McDougall Cottage, and preservation of several heritage landmarks including The Governor’s House and Gaol and West Montrose Covered Bridge;
- Ongoing support for heritage organizations and institutions such as the Waterloo Regional Heritage Foundation and the Heritage Planning Advisory Committee (HPAC);
- Support for heritage festivals, events and volunteers; and
- Protection of heritage resources through heritage policies and guidelines.
The Region is thankful to the Ontario Heritage Trust for this opportunity to showcase these accomplishments.
