Region of Waterloo increasing housing options, addressing community need
Waterloo Region – The Region of Waterloo is partnering to create more housing options, increasing capacity within Waterloo Region’s housing system. Starting at the end of November, House of Friendship will provide temporary transitional housing at its former shelter location at 63 Charles St. E. in Kitchener.
As a result, 25 men will receive supportive transitional housing with 24/7 staffing and supports. This interim solution will not be a shelter and cannot accept drop-ins, rather, it will be short-term, referral-based accommodation.
“We know that more housing options are needed across the region to address the needs of our community, which is why the Region is working on collaborative solutions to support residents experiencing homelessness,” said Regional Chair Karen Redman.
This is part of the Region’s plan to address homelessness, aligning with the Province’s mandate to end chronic homelessness by the end of 2025. The Region will continue to work collaboratively with area municipalities and community partners on additional solutions with more information to come in the upcoming weeks.
