Region of Waterloo celebrates Bike Month

Waterloo Region – June is Bike Month and the Region of Waterloo is hosting a number of family friendly events to celebrate.

Whether you are a road warrior, cycle recreationally or are interested in trying out cycling for the first time, you can demonstrate your commitment by taking the Bike Month Pledge. Just tell us how many days you plan to cycle throughout June, at the end of the month we will ask you to tell us how you did. You will be eligible to win $500 in great prizes. Please visit www.regionofwaterloo.ca/travelwiseevents and click on the pledge link.

To get you fueled up and ready to cycle, the Region is hosting three Bike to Work Breakfasts in June. Stop by between 8 and 9:30 a.m. for a quick snack and drink:

  • June 11, Frank Tompa Drive in the Research and Technology Park, Waterloo
  • June 18, Tannery Building, Kitchener
  • June 25, Cambridge City Hall

If you are looking for a fun Bike Month challenge, join Rob Horne, the Region’s Commissioner of Planning, Housing and Community Services, on his Times Seven event as he buses and bikes through all seven of the Region’s municipalities in one day! If you can’t join him, you can still participate in his journey by following him on twitter @RegionWaterloo.

To get ready for Bike Month, give your bike a tune-up. Choose reflective clothing for maximum visibility and put on your helmet to protect your head. Make sure you ride with the flow of traffic (one meter out from the curb is best), on the road wherever possible and always get off your bike and walk it through the crosswalk to avoid collisions. A map of the Region’s cycling routes and bike paths is available on our website at www.regionofwaterloo.ca. Just click on the Getting Around tab and visit the cycling page. You can also use Google Maps that now display local cycling routes. Just click on the bike icon to help plan a bike friendly route.

If you’re not sure you can commit to a long bike ride, you can try Grand River Transit’s Bus ‘n’ Bike option instead.  All GRT buses have bike racks and all it takes is a few seconds to secure your bike. You can see how it's done in the Bus ‘n’ Bike video located at www.grt.ca. Click on the Rider Programs tab and look for the Bus ‘n’ Bike page. Make sure to send us your #GRTBusNBike story or picture and we’ll share it on twitter.

Whatever way you travel, remember to share the road. For more great cycling tips check out http://bikesafety.caa.ca.
