Region looking for your comments on proposed changes to Duke Street between Frederick and Francis streets
Waterloo Region – The Region of Waterloo and City of Kitchener are working together to find opportunities to make it easier and safer for cyclists to ride along Duke Street between Frederick and Francis streets.
A survey at engagewr.ca/duke-street-cycling-improvements asks residents and business owners to consider two proposed designs:
- Two-way separated bike lanes on Duke from Francis Street to College Street
- Neighbourhood bikeway on Duke from College Street to Frederick Street
The project team reviewed 11 different design options that balanced increasing the ease and safety of cyclists with roadway space constraints, as well as the need to maintain transit service and vehicle access to Duke Street. The two designs presented in the survey are the two preferred options.
The survey is available until March 13. Project information, including frequently asked questions, is posted on the EngageWR Duke Street project page. Subscribe to the project page for future engagement opportunities and project updates.
Regional staff will consider public feedback, technical studies and industry best practices before taking final recommendations to Council later this year.
The Duke Street cycling improvements is in support of the City of Kitchener’s Downtown Cycling Network and aligns with the Region Strategic Plan’s Sustainable Transportation and Environment and Climate Action focus areas.
