Region connects communities one road at a time

Waterloo Region – We often hear it said that Canada has two seasons, winter and construction. With winter on its way out, the Region of Waterloo is getting ready for the construction season.

The Region released its 2022 Construction Activity in Waterloo Region report listing construction projects, both on- and off-road, that cost over $1 million and will take more than four weeks to complete. Although some projects listed started before 2022, and others will span past this year, the investment of construction projects slated to start in 2022 is $175 million.

“While building new corridors, reconstructing roads, and replacing critical infrastructure is an important focus for us at the Region, it’s more than just the construction,” says Tom Galloway, Regional Councillor and Chair of the Planning and Works Committee. “Every project presents an opportunity for us to reimagine how to better connect communities, people and businesses, and improve the way important services are delivered.”

Regional Council’s Strategic Plan sets the direction for staff to look at ways to improve active transportation and mitigate climate change, as well as ensure efficiencies. New roadways and reconstruction offers opportunities to add or upgrade cycling, walking, rolling and transit facilities to offer residents greater choice as they navigate the region. Collaborating with local cities and townships, as well as utility and communication groups, creates efficiencies to look at what is needed for the future while constructing roads today.

As construction begins on several of these projects, the Region invites the public to visit regionofwaterloo.ca (search for Construction and Road Closures) and follow us on the Region of Waterloo’s Twitter and Facebook pages for updates throughout the summer and fall.
