Reconstruction of Beverly Street aimed at improving resident safety

Cambridge, Ontario. (April 8, 2024) Today, as part of the City’s continued efforts to encourage safe and healthy neighbourhoods, construction began at Beverly & Samuelson Streets to create a new multi-use trail and pedestrian underpass at the Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) railway bridge.

In partnership with CPKC, construction will be completed by Dagmar Construction Inc. and include the upgrade of all underground utilities such as watermain and sewer, as well as asphalt and curb replacements. Depending on weather conditions, work is expected to be completed by December 2024, with the full re-opening of all streets.

“I am very happy to see this project finally break ground after many years,” said Cambridge Mayor, Jan Liggett. “It has been a long process, with debates around the horseshoe, environmental assessment, community consultation, and moving through the design and budget processes. The positive impacts will not be just in Ward 4 but will be felt throughout the city.”

To ensure property owners in the area were aware of construction details, the City provided helpful questions and answers and the expected completion date ahead of the project start.

Ongoing construction will close Beverly Street north of Dundas Street North to Samuelson Street, and Samuelson Street between Kimberly Road and Elgin Street North. To facilitate traffic flow, a detour will be in place. Residents are encouraged to plan an alternative route ahead of time for the duration of this project.

To minimize disruption and facilitate access as much as possible, the road reconstruction will be completed in two stages:

  1. Stage 1 – Beverly Street and Samuelson Street between ( North of CP tracks) (tie-in on Samuelson) and (tie-in at Elgin); for approximately 10 days
  2. Stage 2 – Beverly Street (south of CP tracks) to (tie-in with the Dundas Roundabout) will be closed until early fall 2024.

Encouraging safe and healthy neighbourhoods is a strategic action included in the City’s Strategic Plan – Cambridge Connected. The City collaborates with our community partners to address safety concerns through neighbourhood-level initiatives such as traffic safety. This project required City engineering staff to come together with local partners to formulate an innovative design, taking highly complex construction and traffic requirements into consideration. Through collaborations like this, the City is able to enhance and celebrate the unique personalities of our neighbourhoods.

“Our goal through the reconstruction of this underpass, is to create a safer environment for everyone, ensuring families, commuters and visitors can move about our city with peace of mind, lowering blood pressures by improving traffic flow”, continued Liggett, “please don’t forget that we have restaurants and shops nearby that will be affected during construction and could use that bit of love and cash!”

The City appreciates the community’s patience while work to complete these important infrastructure improvements to improve safety for all users is completed.
