Put your pumpkin in your green bin (2)

Waterloo Region - An estimated 50,000 pumpkins are used as Jack O' Lanterns to celebrate Halloween in Waterloo Region. Discarded Halloween pumpkins can produce approximately 200 metric tonnes of organic waste. Residents are asked to divert pumpkins away from the Region’s landfill by composting them in the green bin.

Some options to compost your pumpkin:

  • Cut up your pumpkin and place it in your green bin.
  • Place your whole pumpkin on top or beside your green bin at the curb.
  • Cut up your pumpkin and add it to your backyard composter.

Remember to remove candles and other lights.

By using the green bin to compost your pumpkins, you are recycling this waste into compost to help grow more pumpkins and other crops, and preserving space in the Region’s only landfill.

Additional information on all our waste programs can be found on our website at www.regionofwaterloo.ca/waste, in the township collection calendars, or from the 24-hour Customer Service team at 519-575-4400.
