Put your pumpkin in your green bin
Waterloo Region - An estimated 50,000 pumpkins are used as Jack O' Lanterns to celebrate Halloween in the Region of Waterloo. Pumpkins discarded after Halloween normally contribute 200 metric tonnes of organic waste to the Region’s landfill site, all of which could be diverted for composting through the Region’s Green Bin program.
Some options to compost your pumpkin:
Cut up your pumpkin and place in your Green Bin.
- Place your whole pumpkin on top or beside your Green Bin when at the curb.
- Cut up your pumpkin and add it to your backyard composter.
Remember to remove candles and other lights.
By using the Green Bin to compost your pumpkins, you are recycling this food waste, and helping to preserve precious space in the Region’s landfill.
