Public Health reporting high daily COVID-19 case counts
Waterloo Region – Waterloo Region is experiencing an increasing number of COVID-19 cases. Daily COVID-19 case counts have doubled, signalling a change in local transmission. For the period of Friday, November 5 through to Sunday, November 7, 2021 Public Health is reporting 104 new COVID-19 cases.
Clusters of cases that are associated with households and/or social events in private settings are contributing to the increase of cases. Individuals who are not immunized against COVID-19 continue to be the most affected in our community. As we seen have in past waves, when our community rates increase so do our rates in school-aged children. An estimated 126,000 residents in Waterloo Region are not yet immunized or not yet eligible for immunization. In the absence of public health precautions, these individuals remain vulnerable to COVID-19.
“This increase in COVID-19 case rates was not unexpected, as people are having more social contact and spending more time indoors in the colder months,” said Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang, Medical Officer of Health. “It is however a reminder that the Delta variant will spread rapidly when given the chance, and that getting vaccinated and continuing to practice public health precautions in our interactions with others is of prime importance. Through our case and contact investigations we are seeing clusters of cases amongst households, as well as from social events in private settings where precautions have been relaxed or are absent.”
COVID-19 continues to circulate in our community. All residents are advised to:
- Practice physical distancing between yourself and people you don’t live with
- Wear a mask or face covering in all indoor public spaces and outdoor settings where required or where distance can not be maintained
- Limit your close contacts where possible, especially indoors and ensure indoor environments you spend time in are well-ventilated
- If you have any symptoms, self-isolate from others in your household immediately and seek testing at a local assessment and testing centre
- Get vaccinated and get your booster, once you are eligible
