Preston Secondary School student receives Bill Struck Memorial Scholarship

During a virtual Council session this evening, Cambridge Mayor Kathryn McGarry and City Council congratulated Maria Tataru of Preston Secondary School as the 2021 recipient of the annual Bill Struck Memorial Scholarship.

Maria has demonstrated a commitment to her community through involvement with numerous activities, such as tutoring, babysitting, volunteering with seniors and working part-time for a non-profit organization.

Maria immigrated to Canada from Romania in 2008 with her family. She credits her mother as her role model who worked hard to give her opportunities in a new country.  Maria has demonstrated leadership at school and achieved academic success.

“A sincere congratulations to Maria. She’s already working to make our community a better place for all and I look forward to all she will accomplish in the future,” said Mayor McGarry. “We are eager to recognize the young people working to build on the incredible sense of community we have here, all while honouring the memory of Bill Struck.”

The Bill Struck Memorial Scholarship was created in 2000 and recognizes a Cambridge youth who has demonstrated significant leadership and community engagement, and will be attending a post-secondary institution. The scholarship totals $250.

For 28 years, Councillor Bill Struck served on the Preston, Cambridge and Region of Waterloo Councils, where he encouraged youth to attend post-secondary education. The fund commemorates the former Councillor’s service to the community of Cambridge and his support of youth.

Cambridge youth between ages 14-22 can apply for the award in the spring of each year. With a focus on leadership and community involvement, the scholarship is awarded to a student that has shown commitment to bettering Cambridge through their community engagement.

For the application, the individual must include details about extracurricular activities, moments of leadership, and role models they look up to. This includes activities such as volunteering, working part-time, joining a club or participating in sports.
