Ontario Works cheques to be picked up instead of mailed out due to potential postal strike
Waterloo Region – The Region of Waterloo has decided not to mail out November’s Ontario Works cheques due to the potential for a rotating postal strike. The majority of people receiving Ontario Works use direct deposit and won’t be affected.
“We don’t want to risk cheques getting held up in the mail,” said Bob Theisz, Supervisor of Finance for Community Services. “People in our community depend on these benefits to help meet their basic needs. They can’t afford any delays.”
Cheques will be available for pick up at 99 Regina Street South in Waterloo and 150 Main Street in Cambridge on October 31, the same day that they are cashable.
Regional staff will ensure that clients who do not have transportation to the Waterloo or Cambridge offices will still receive their cheques. Clients are encouraged to call their caseworker if they have any questions or concerns.
Payments to vendors will continue to be mailed out. Vendors can call 519-575-4400 if they have inquiries about a cheque they are expecting to receive in the mail.
