New overflow site will help meet the need for emergency shelter in Cambridge
Waterloo Region – A new temporary overflow shelter set to open Monday, November 2nd in Cambridge will help protect the homeless population from COVID-19 and address emergency shelter pressures ahead of winter.
The overflow at the Super 8 hotel on Hespeler Road will provide 30 additional spaces for individuals experiencing homelessness to have temporary accommodations.
The Region of Waterloo and Cambridge Shelter Corporation made the decision to locate the site at the hotel after consulting with the City of Cambridge.
The fully-staffed site will be open 24/7, will enable physical distancing and will provide participants with medical support, food and other basic necessities. Cambridge Shelter staff will work with participants to find permanent housing.
Since the pandemic began, more than 80 people have moved from homelessness into permanent housing through the support and efforts of the Cambridge Shelter Corporation.
The Region and the Cambridge Shelter, as partners in the provision of shelter services, will work with the City of Cambridge and other stakeholders to ensure the shelter integrates well with the surrounding neighbourhood.
