New Albert Street playground gives children a place to play

Waterloo Region – Children at the Albert Street Regional housing community in Waterloo are ready for outdoor fun with the arrival of their new train-inspired playground equipment.

A committee representing residents, community partners, local churches and Regional staff worked together to plan for and fund the project.

“We are delighted that the children of the Albert Street housing complex and the surrounding community have a safe and enjoyable place to play. This was achieved by the community working together including residents, local volunteers and the generous support from our community,” says Regional Chair Ken Seiling.

Local churches, service clubs, businesses and many friends pitched in with funding, while Regional staff prepared the site for the build. Community youth held a local fundraiser and volunteers sourced donors for the $60,000 project, which has a value of $80,000.

Earthscape, an Elmira-based playground building company, donated their design time to the process. Inspired by the nearby railway tracks, the equipment features wooden train tracks, a red silo, climbing structures and slides, and even a decommissioned train.

The community, volunteers and donors are invited to attend the official unveiling of the new playground to be held on Sept. 23, 2014, from 4 to 6 p.m. with a rain date of Sept. 24. The event will also include a BBQ and donor recognition.
