NBA guard Jamal Murray reaches out to children and youth in Waterloo Region.
Waterloo Region – This Saturday, September 2nd 20-year-old NBA player Jamal Murray from Kitchener will visit a neighborhood in Waterloo for the second annual event for families living in the area - Jamal is coming with a big announcement.
The 20-year-old NBA sophomore will visit the Waterloo Region Housing community on 45 Amos Avenue to have lunch with 90 children and youth; registered kids will also receive school bags filled with supplies. Waterloo Region Housing is excited for the community to have an opportunity to meet Jamal and celebrate the ongoing success of his career and the strength that brings to the community as a positive role model.
“Getting the chance to meet a professional basketball player who grew up here can provide inspiration to children and youth as they prepare for their return to school,” said Waterloo Region Housing Manager Mina Fayez-Bahgat.
Attendees will be pleased to witness the announcement of a partnership with Murray and the Region of Waterloo to dedicate a new basketball court that will serve as a lasting legacy of goodwill to a community that was brought together by the tragic death of an 18-month-old toddler in the summer of 2016.
Murray grew up in Kitchener and attended Grand River Collegiate before moving away to pursue his basketball career. In 2016 Murray was selected seventh in the NBA draft by the Denver Nuggets.
“It’s every athlete's dream to be able to make it big enough to help and give back to the community that made me who I am, I am thrilled to partner with the Region of Waterloo to make an impact on the future generation of youth and give them a safe place to play,” said Murray.
Murray went on to say, “as I grow as an athlete and leader, I look forward to making a larger contribution and impact in my community as an ambassador.”
