National Housing Day: Impact of Housing

Waterloo Region – Housing isn’t simply bricks and mortar; it can turn despair into hope. On November 19, the Region of Waterloo will mark National Housing Day by celebrating local housing achievements and sharing lived experiences that provide insight into the impact of housing on individual lives and the community.

Guest speakers from Waterloo Region will share inspiring stories of how having a place to call home made a difference in their lives. The event will also celebrate housing initiatives in Waterloo Region.

“National Housing Day is a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge local accomplishments in housing over the past year and to celebrate the hard work and dedication of our housing partners,” said Deb Schlichter, Director of Housing.

Awards will also be handed out, including the Kindred Spirit Award – an honour given to an individual who experienced homeless and who now supports others experiencing homelessness.

The celebrations will begin with greetings from Regional Chair Ken Seiling, Regional Councillors, MPs and MPPs, as well as other prominent guests.

After the formal celebrations, a reception will be held and Homes for Hope pins from the Homelessness and Housing Umbrella Group will be available for purchase. Other housing stability groups will also sell items to support their housing initiatives.

National Housing Day is sponsored by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and the Region of Waterloo.
