Multiplex discussions resume Monday, March 20

Cambridge, Ontario. March 15, 2017… A special council session is being held on Monday, March 20 to discuss next steps in the decision-making process for the multiplex facility. Council last met on December 12, 2016 when the Site Evaluation Assessment Task Force presented their report recommending potential sites for the centre. Council has since taken time to review the report and City staff will be providing follow-up information detailing the implications of each site.

“I am looking forward to continuing the discussion,” said Cambridge Mayor Doug Craig. “There are a number of factors to be considered and we won’t be in a position to make a final decision on Monday. It is complicated and this will be the first step in this next phase of the process.”

The report from City staff will include information about:

  • Compliance with the Official Plan
  • Cost estimates for each location – purchasing and site servicing
  • Timing implications
  • Opportunity costs from land development (i.e., potential tax revenue)

As a next step, Council is expected to give further direction to City staff based on the options they want to explore. In which case, Council will reconvene at least one more time in the near future.

“Council and staff recognize the community’s interest in the multiplex and desire to move it forward,” continued Mayor Craig. “We want to do this right, and it’s important that we balance the wishes of the community with how much a multiplex will cost taxpayers in Cambridge.”

The meeting will be held starting at 7:00 p.m. in Council Chambers at Historic City Hall in Cambridge (46 Dickson Street). The public is welcome to attend. More information on the Cambridge multiplex and next steps are available at www.cambridge.ca/multiplex. The staff report will be posted on the website Thursday, March 16.
