Media Release - TSSA OE's Chief Officer Announces Retirement (June 9, 2015)

TSSA Operating Engineers Chief Officer Announces Retirement
Chief Officer John W. B. Coulter set to retire on July 31, 2015

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Toronto, ON, June 9, 2015) – After nearly two decades of dedicated service with the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA), John W. B. Coulter, Manager and Chief Officer of TSSA’s Operating Engineers Safety Program, will be retiring on July 31, 2015.

“For 17 years, John has been a powerhouse for Operating Engineers and his retirement is well deserved,” said Mike Adams, TSSA’s Statutory Director for Boilers and Pressure Vessels and Operating Engineers (BPV/OE). “It will be difficult to imagine the profession without John in the picture,” added Mr. Adams.

Mr. Coulter has made immense and important contributions to both TSSA’s Operating Engineers program and the broader profession, including the development of the current Operating Engineers Regulation, the introduction of risk-based inspections, and the growing recognition of Power Engineers as a critical profession in the energy sector. More recently, Mr. Coulter has championed the issue of a looming skills shortage, devoted his energies to
extolling the benefits of a career in Power Engineering, and advocated for expanding training opportunities by guiding the approval of seven Ontario colleges for Power Engineering training.

“I would like to extend a special thanks to John for his tireless leadership and his deep commitment to public safety,” said Michael Beard, TSSA President and CEO. “He has been a formidable force in the OE sector and leaves a legacy that will endure far into the future. John’s tenure as Chief Officer has been exemplary and his retirement is a loss to both TSSA and the broader energy sector,” added Mr. Beard.

Following Mr. Coulter’s retirement next month, the position of Manager and Chief Officer of TSSA’s Operating Engineers Safety Program will be consolidated under TSSA’s Statutory Director for BPV/OE Mike Adams.
