Media Release - Slide into Summer Safety

Slide Into Summer, Safely!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Toronto, ON, June 29, 2006). Summer brings a compulsive urge to catch all the fun under the sun. When schools are out and amusement rides are up, the young and not-so-young become fearless. You want to be the first on that ride, make a splash on that slide, and go-go-go on that kart. Well, if you want to get the most out of summer and squeeze all the fun you can out of your amusement park experience, take a few tips on rider safety from the experts at the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA).

Sliding into Safety

Here are a few reminders on the safe way to have fun on waterslides:

  • Obey all orders given by the attendant.
  • Do not dive, run, stand, kneel, or rotate in the slide channel.
  • Keep your hands inside the slide channel.
  • Do not double ride with another person.
  • Do not start down the slide until the splash down area is clear, or until instructed by the attendant.
  • Clear the splash area promptly.

Be Go-Kart Smart

Before your rev that engine and hit the track, follow these safety procedures and be ‘go-kart smart’:

  • Wear the approved helmet provided.
  • Secure hair longer than shoulder length.
  • Do not bump another kart, swerve or stop your kart on the track.
  • Stay on the track.
  • Always use the seat belt provided.
  • Report to the attendant anyone who appears to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Ensure your head is below the rollover protection.
  • Obey the attendant. Stay in the kart until the ride is complete, and unload safely in the pit area when directed by the attendant.

It is important to remember that riders, not the ride, cause most incidents especially at waterslides and go-kart facilities. So, when heading out to your favourite amusement park this summer, follow these basic safety tips and look for TSSA’s RideSmart team who will be visiting a number of these sites to further promote safe riding.
