Saint Anns Man Prosecuted for Working Without a TSSA Fuels Certificate
Court levies $5000 fine
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Toronto, ON, December 5, 2016) – Ontario’s public safety regulator, the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA), has successfully prosecuted a Saint Anns man for working on fuel-fired equipment without a TSSA-issued Fuels Certificate.
In July 2014, a TSSA inspector received notice of a faulty natural gas stove at a residence in Dunnville, Ontario and upon further investigation discovered that the repair work on the tenant’s gas well and regulator had been performed by an uncertified gas technician. Mr. Peter Stroomer of Saint Anns, Ontario was identified by the TSSA inspector, issued immediate cease and desist orders, and subsequently prosecuted.
Mr. Stroomer pled guilty in the Ontario Court of Justice in Cayuga to working on a gas appliance without being the holder of a certificate for that purpose, violating the Technical Standards and Safety Act, 2000. The court levied a fine of $5000, plus the mandatory 25% victim surcharge, for a total of $6250.
“Lethal risks can be created if a fuel-fired appliance is not properly serviced,” said John Marshall, Director of TSSA’s Fuels Safety Program. “Anyone installing, repairing or servicing fuel-fired appliances must possess a valid TSSA certification and heed all applicable safety standards.”
If in doubt of a technician’s certification, contact TSSA toll-free at 1-877-682-8772 to confirm whether a gas technician is properly certified.
