Media Advisory: National Housing Day

Waterloo Region – Housing isn’t just a roof over one’s head; it can be stability and community. On November 17, the Region of Waterloo will mark National Housing Day by sharing lived experiences that provide insight into the impact of housing for the entire community, including newcomers.

“The theme for this year’s event is Homes for Everyone,” said Deb Schlichter, Director of Housing Services. “We are telling an inclusive story. Waterloo Region is a welcoming community committed to making sure everyone gets the housing they need, no matter who they are or where they are from.”

The event is an opportunity to celebrate housing acheivements from the past year, and recognize the contributions of the Region’s community partners and of individuals with lived experience who now support others in similar circumstances. New this year, the Immigration Partnership will recognize landlords who provided homes for refugees.

“Providing flexible and affordable housing is one of many ways local residents welcomed Syrian refugees in the last year,” said Tara Bedard, Immigration Partnership Manager. “Landlords deserve recognition for making this national undertaking a success here in Waterloo Region.”

National Housing Day is sponsored by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and the Region of Waterloo.
