Mandatory masking lifting on Grand River Transit

Waterloo Region – Masks will no longer be required on Grand River Transit (GRT) buses, trains and at customer service centres, beginning on June 11.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, GRT has relied on the guidance of Region of Waterloo Public Health and the Province of Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health to keep customers safe. This change aligns with the Province’s announcement to lift mandatory masking requirements on transit in the province.

“I want to thank our customers and the community for following the safety measures we put in place throughout the pandemic and for standing by us throughout this challenging time,” said Neil Malcolm, Acting Director of Transit Services. “Your support for the measures we’ve taken helped keep our community safe and transit running.”

Wearing a mask is an important way to protect yourself and others. GRT supports Region of Waterloo Public Health advice that regardless of where you are, wearing a mask is encouraged if you feel it is the right choice for you.

Masks have been mandatory on GRT buses, trains and MobilityPLUS vehicles - as well as in customer service centres, and bus shelters - since July 13, 2020. It was one of many safety measures implemented to keep customers safe. Safety measures have been gradually rolled back in coordination with the Province’s reopening plans.

Communications materials, including audio announcements, signage and decals will be updated in the coming days. For the latest information on COVID-19 safety measures, visit grt.ca or call 519-585-7555.
