Labour disruption to begin: CUPE Local 1882 walks away from the table
Cambridge, Ont., February 17, 2017 – The City’s inside workers, represented by CUPE Local 1882, have rejected the City’s latest offer and abruptly walked away from the table. The Union has called for a labour disruption, effective 12:01 a.m. Friday.
“We are surprised by this turn of events. This is not the outcome we were working toward,” said City Manager Gary Dyke. “We understand the inconvenience a second labour disruption causes our residents. At the end of the day, we need to come to a resolution that is fair, equitable for all our employees, and affordable for the taxpayers in our city.”
While the disruption may cause a delay to some services, most City services will still be operational. All City facilities, including recreational buildings and programs, will remain open. The majority of City services will also be operational. However, given that many staff will be redeployed to provide these services, the public is likely to experience some delays with responses to inquiries. Parking and access to City facilities may also be impacted because of picket lines.
“Once again, we ask the community for their patience and cooperation,” continued Dyke. “We value our employees and want to get them back to work as soon as possible.”
The following are anticipated delays and closures:
Reduced service levels where some delays may be noticed:
- Facility bookings
- Cemetery administration
- Processing of planning applications, including building inspections
- By-law enforcement inspections such as noise complaints, property standards matters, and sidewalk snow clearing complaints
- Responding to public inquiries regarding road, water and sewer issues.
Closed or suspended services:
- Archives office
- Event planning committees
