Joint venture provides unique employment opportunities for youth living in community housing

Waterloo Region – Youth who live in and near housing communities owned by the Region of Waterloo will have the opportunity to work in their neighourhoods and contribute to their communities this summer while building skills to help with their future careers.

Through a new program called YouthForce, a group of 25 people between the ages of 14 and 25 will be hired in July and August to do various jobs, including community clean ups, beautification of the grounds, cleaning, flyer drops, and unit inspections.

“This program is part of a Regional strategy to help break the cycle of poverty and create healthy communities and vibrant neighbourhoods,” said Mina Fayez-Bahgat, Manager of Waterloo Region Housing. “It’s also the first time we’ve worked closely with so many community partners to help create a summer job program for youth.”

YouthForce is a joint venture between the Region, Carizon, Langs, Kinbridge Community Association, House of Friendship, and Greenway-Chaplin Community Centre.

Interviews for the summer job opportunities are scheduled for Saturday, June 11 and drop-ins are welcome. Youth who are hired will also receive learning opportunities, including career planning, employment coaching, workplace habits, job searching, resume building, interview preparation and financial planning.
