Jane Brewer’s election withdraw sparks voter awareness campaign

Cambridge – Jane Brewer announced her decision to withdraw from the Municipal election on September 30, 2014 – too late to be officially removed from the ballot.

As a result, the City of Cambridge and the Region of Waterloo are launching an awareness campaign aimed at voters explaining Brewer’s intent to withdraw from the upcoming municipal election. “Failure to inform the public adequately could result in her being elected to office,” said Michael Di Lullo, Clerk for the City of Cambridge. Brewer has already stated that she does not intend to take office if accidently elected.

If Brewer is voted in, Regional Council would need to declare the seat vacant. Regional Council would then need to determine if a replacement is appointed or a by-election held. The City of Cambridge would have the responsibility of conducting any by-election.

“Jane Brewer is very supportive of our efforts to encourage the public to choose one of several other candidates running in Cambridge for the Regional seat,” said Kris Fletcher, Region of Waterloo Clerk.

In a recent letter to the Region Jane Brewer said, “I request that the Region and City of Cambridge take any action necessary to inform the public that I do not intend to take office. It has truly been a pleasure to serve the residents of Cambridge for the past 36 years.

Jane Brewer decided to withdraw due to recent developments with her health.
