It's a hot one, and we need to conserve water

Waterloo Region – This week’s early and prolonged heat wave is taking its toll on the Region’s groundwater reserves. The Region reminds all residents of the Water Conservation By-law, and to strictly adhere to the by-law restrictions and reduce water use at this time.

The Water Conservation By-Law, which took effect this past Wednesday, ensures the Region preserves its water supply during fire emergencies or drought conditions and ensures adequate supplies for residents.

During this heat wave, it is especially important for residents to adhere to using outdoor water only when needed, and only on their designated watering day. All in-ground sprinkler systems should only be running if absolutely necessary. Some residents may also experience reduced water pressure in their homes due to the extra demand on water pumps. Only using water as necessary will help all residents in the region.

City splash pads will remain open as cooling options during the heat wave.

The Region will continue monitoring reserves and advise of any further water restrictions the next few days.

About the Water Conservation By-Law

Prior to the Water Conservation By-law, water use would increase up to 50 per cent during the summer months. This increased water use put additional strain on the water supply and distribution system. Outdoor water use such as watering grass or gardens, filling pools or washing cars, can quickly increase your water consumption. Following the Water Conservation By-law as part of your summer watering can help ensure a sustainable supply of water for everyone.
