How to get a new Blue Box
Waterloo Region – In the last few years, approximately 1,000 blue boxes have been given out each week for free. After careful consideration as part of the 2013 budget process, Regional Council approved the recommendation to only provide new homes or residents in Waterloo Region with free blue boxes.
New residents or home owners in Waterloo Region can pick up a free blue box at either the Cambridge (201 Savage Drive) or Waterloo (925 Erb Street West, Gate 1) waste administration buildings. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A copy of your new deed or purchase agreement is required as proof of new ownership.
Replacement or additional recycling boxes can be purchased from local retailers.
For the safety of collection crews, who pick up thousands of boxes each day, an approved size recycling box must:
-
- Be a maximum height of 40 cm (16 inches).
- Have a rim around the top of the container.
- Be made of rigid plastic that will not bend or give when lifted.
Recyclables in wheeled carts, laundry hampers, storage totes or cardboard boxes will not be collected.
Tenants or renters should ask their landlord or property manager about garbage and recycling containers.
