Holiday Service Changes

Waterloo Region – Here is a list of Region of Waterloo service changes for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

PLEASE NOTE: The Region of Waterloo is making service changes as the Province places Waterloo Region under a 28-day, Ontario-wide Shutdown, starting at 12:01 a.m. on December 26, 2020. Please see this page for service changes that are a direct result of the shutdown, as well as other COVID-19 related protocols or changes in place.

All Regional Administrative Offices (99 Regina – Waterloo, 150 Frederick – Kitchener, 150 Main – Cambridge, Airport Administrative offices.) – Closed Friday, December 25, Saturday, December 26, 2020, Monday December 28 and Friday January 1, 2021.

Please note that beginning December 26, 2020, 150 Frederick Street, Regional Administrative Headquarters is closed due to the Province-wide Shutdown and services will be by appointment only.

Regional Administrative Headquarters will be closed to the public. Services will be by appointment only.

Service first call centre – 519-575-4400, will not be affected.

Grand River Transit

Grand River Transit will operate on Christmas holiday service December 21, 2020 – January 3, 2021.
Holiday service is noted on all route schedules.

Christmas Day – Friday, December 25

  • Route 301 ION light rail: Service every 30 minutes until approximately 10 p.m.
  • Routes 7, 51, 201, 302: Service every 30 minutes until approximately 6 p.m.
  • Routes 1, 6, 8, 12, 55, 56, 59, 60, 61, 202, 203, 204, 205, 206: Service every 60 minutes until approximately 6pm

Boxing Day – Saturday, December 26

  • Holiday service, except Route 302 ION bus which will run on a Saturday schedule.

New Year’s Eve - Thursday, December 31

  • Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Public Health recommendations to stay home, except for essential purposes, GRT will not be providing free service or any extra service on New Year's Eve.

New Year's Day - Friday, January 1

  • Routes will operate on a holiday service schedule.

Location hours:

  • December 25 (Christmas Day) – Closed
  • December 26 (Boxing Day) – holiday hours: 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • January 1 (New Year’s Day) – Closed
  • All other days will operate regular weekday/weekend hours.

Region of Waterloo International Airport  Open and will not be affected, however the administrative offices will be closed.

Curbside waste collection changes:     

There is no curbside waste collection on Friday, December 25, 2020 or on Friday, January 1, 2021.  For these two weeks only, Friday collection will be on Saturday:

Special Christmas tree collection will run all areas of the region twice, the two weeks of January 4 and January 11, 2021, on your regular weekly waste collection day. Please remove all lights, stands and plastic bags. Trees put curbside after this special tree collection will be collected with garbage and count as a Bulky Item. 

Double garbage days: Double your limit of garbage bags or cans will be collected for two collection weeks, on your regularly scheduled garbage collection day. 

  • For Cambridge and Waterloo, the weeks of December 28 and January 11.
  • For Kitchener and the Townships, the weeks of January 4 and January 18. 

Residential drop-off: All waste sites will be closed on the statutory holidays for residential drop-off:  Friday, December 25 (Christmas Day); Saturday, December 26 (Boxing Day); and Friday, January 1, 2021 (New Years Day).

Region of Waterloo Library
Borrow your holiday reads Thursday, December 24, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in-branch, and Thursday, December 31, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. using our Library Takeout curbside pick up.

All branches are closed on Friday, December 25, Saturday December 26, 2020 and Friday, January 1, 2021. Questions? Contact our Ask a Librarian service at 226-748-8030. 

Regional Children’s Centres  
Closed as of Friday December 25, 2020 and re-opening Monday January 4, 2021. 

Home Child Care

The Region’s licensed Home Child Care is operating as specified by your provider. Offices will be closed December 25, 26, and January 1.

Sunnyside Seniors Services 
Sunnyside Home Reception:

December 25, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

December 26, Closed

December 28, Closed

January 1, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Seniors’ Services Administration: Closed December 25, 28 and January 1

Sunnyside Wellness Centre
Closed December 25, 28, and January 1 Remains closed for all services with the exception of physiotherapy and foot care appointments.

Community Alzheimer Programs
Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge – Day Programs Closed December 24 – 28 and January 1. Overnight stay closed December 23 – 29.

Young Onset Dementia Association - Closed

Region of Waterloo Employment Centres and Welcome Spaces (99 Regina, 150 Main, and 235 King) Closed December 25, 28 and January 1. Open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. December 29 to December 31.

Waterloo Region Museum 

Closed and will remain closed throughout the Ontario-wide Shutdown.

 Doon Heritage Village 
Closed and will remain closed throughout the Ontario-wide Shutdown.

Schneider Haus 
Closed and will remain closed throughout the Ontario-wide Shutdown.

McDougall Cottage 
Closed and will remain closed throughout the Ontario-wide Shutdown.
