Grand River Foods wins conservation award

Waterloo Region – The Region of Waterloo is proud to recognize Grand River Foods for changes that save 2.9 million litres of drinking water each year.

Today, Regional Chair Karen Redman presented the Water Efficiency Excellence Award to Grand River Foods at its Cambridge office. The award is given each year to an organization that completes a notable water efficiency project.

“Water conservation benefits everyone because it protects our community’s drinking water,” said Regional Chair Redman. “It’s great to see local businesses like Grand River Foods invest in water efficiency.”

The Region’s Water Efficient Technology (WET) Program helped fund the company’s water audits and a new hand wash station that uses on-demand sensors, instead of an inefficient foot-pedal system.

The new hand wash system cut water use by an impressive 84 per cent and saves up to 9,600 litres per day. That adds up to 2.9 million litres per year, or the annual water use of 19 homes.

The Region’s WET Program offers funding and resources to help commercial, industrial and institutional organizations improve their water efficiency.

Conservation is good for the environment and helps ensure there’s enough water for our growing community. It keeps the Region’s infrastructure costs down. Homes and businesses who use water efficiently also benefit from lower water bills.
