Flags lowered at Regional buildings to remember COVID-19 victims
Waterloo Region – Flags will be lowered at all Regional buildings today to honour those who have died from COVID-19 since a global pandemic was declared a year ago.
All across Canada, we will remember those we have lost, and the people they left behind. On this significant day we also recognize those who have been impacted by COVID-19, and pay tribute to all those who continue to work hard and make incredible sacrifices in our fight against the virus.
“It is important to pay tribute to the people – parents, siblings, friends, and loved ones we’ve lost in our community and across Canada,” said Regional Chair Karen Redman. “This sombre anniversary is a reminder of the gravity of the pandemic and the importance of continuing to protect each other while we work to get everyone vaccinated against the virus,” said Redman.
On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared the spread of the coronavirus a pandemic, and called on countries to take urgent action.
The Government of Canada has designated March 11, 2021 as a National Day of Observance to commemorate the people who lost their lives and the significant impacts we have all felt because of COVID-19.
COVID-19 has claimed the lives of 236 people in Waterloo Region since the pandemic began.
