Flags lowered at Cambridge City Facilities to remember COVID-19 victims
Flags will be lowered at Cambridge City buildings, including City Hall and Fire Stations, today to honour those who have died from COVID-19 since the global pandemic was declared a year ago.
On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared the spread of the coronavirus a pandemic. Earlier this week, Prime Minister Trudeau announced the Government of Canada has designated Thursday, March 11, 2021 as a National Day of Observance to commemorate the people who lost their lives and the significant impacts we have all felt because of COVID-19.
“COVID-19 has claimed the lives of 236 people in Waterloo Region since the pandemic began,” said Mayor Kathryn McGarry. “This day honours the memory of our lost loved ones and recognizes everyone who has made incredible sacrifices in our fight against the virus. It also marks how much has happened and how far we have come in one year. As more people get vaccinated, the closer we get to beating COVID-19”.
